About The Role

HUED is hiring a Director of Research, Policy and Practice to execute patient-centered research, trainings and education throughout the company. This position would be cross-functional, serving various product development teams and other members of the research team. This position reports to the CEO.

Duties and Key responsibilities include:

  • Stay on top of current medical and health equity research articles to determine what information needs to be disseminated to the patient base.
  • Develop new-age trainings for physician base (medical students, residents, physicians) to “create a foundation for inclusion” within the medical system: anti-racism, critical race theory, unconscious bias, stereotyping, microaggressions, history of medical racism, allyship.
  • Find opportunities to present HUED unique patient information to reputable medical associations for physicians of color.
  • Create unique virtual/communications opportunities for educating patients and physicians (eg, virtual plenaries, panel discussions).
  • Develop unique ways to engage healthcare payors in health equity initiatives (e.g., partnerships, education, advocacy campaigns, etc)
  • Build and maintain relationships with patient groups, nonprofits, etc
  • Act as public spokesperson representing the organization at conferences, in the media, and other public speaking venues when it involves research, policy or practice work.
  • Work with team to generate ideas for persuasive research products and supervise the execution of those products including reports, fact sheets, messaging guidance, and op-eds
  • Routinely seek out available research opportunities for patients of color (work in collaboration with social media/comms to disseminate on website/app)
  • Seek out opportunities to meet and collaborate with research foundations such as RWJF to discuss research needs or desires of patient base
  • Work with engineering team to create website/app feature to collect concerns and stories from patients and physicians of color
  • Utilizing storytelling, create advocacy campaigns using real-life stories to deliver impact of research stats for patients and physicians of color
  • Mentor, guide, and develop a team of researchers, policy analysts, and experts; monitor and direct their workflow
  • Support the research and policy needs of advocacy campaigns, and ensure that our advocacy campaigns are serving the goals of HUED.
  • Build strong relationships with coalitions with intersecting interests (specifically focused on social determinants of health)
  • Monitor, anticipate and analyze relevant policy developments impacting patients of color and help develop strategies for engagement around them
  • Build and maintain relationships with key policymakers and healthcare stakeholders in D.C., including the administration, think tanks and associations

Skills & Knowledge:

  • Bachelors or equivalent years of experience or related field, preferably in the field of Public Health, Urban Studies, Data Science, Sociology, Statistics, or related
  • Knowledge of or familiarity with quantitative and/or qualitative data analysis programs, and/or using SAS, STATA, NVivo, other qualitative or quantitative analysis programs, and/or database applications is preferred, but not required
  • Strong interest in racial equity and addressing structural racism within the healthcare system
  • Knowledge of U.S. healthcare system preferred
  • Ability to work effectively on and manage competing priorities for multiple tasks and projects
  • Excellent oral and written and interpersonal communication skills

  • Proficient in common productivity software programs including Word, Excel, and others.
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative on projects.
